About Coach Reason

Coach Reason began coaching hurdlers at the age of 19 while attending Linfield University. In 42 years he has coached numerous League Champions and State placers in both hurdle events at both the middle school and high school levels. Below is a list of recent athletes that he has coached:

2024 - Girls 100m hurdles 5th place finisher at the State meet in her division from Blanchet Catholic HS. This is her first year to run the hurdles.

A  second girl from Blanchet also qualified for the State meet as well.

2024 - Girls 100m hurdle 2nd place finisher at the middle school "Meet of Champions" state meet from Jefferson Middle School.

"How well you do during the season is NOT based on how hard you work during the season, though that helps, but more importantly, what you do to improve during the OFF-SEASON."

She is a great example of someone putting in the extra time during the summer months, just a couple of days per week, and in February prior to her season starting, to get better, and she ended up improving from 18.1 to 16.1 and 2nd place at the State Meet! (Up from 39th place last year).

2023 - Boys 3rd and 5th place finisher in his division at the State meet in both hurdle events from Blanchet Catholic HS. He was a senior and this was his first year to run the hurdles.

2023 - Girls 100m hurdle district champion, also from Blanchet Catholic HS. She placed 4th and 5th place in both hurdle events at the State meet in her division. This was also her first year to run the hurdles.

A second girl from Blanchet also qualified for the State meet.

2022 - Girls 4th and 5th place finisher at the State meet in both hurdle events from Scio HS. She was a senior sprinter with no hurdle experience. I taught her how to hurdle 2 weeks prior to the district meet.

2021 - Girls 300m hurdle district champion, also from Scio HS. She placed 3rd and 4th place at the State meet in both hurdles. I only worked with her one year because she was a senior.

2018 - Boys 300m hurdle district champion and State qualifier from Sprague HS. I only worked with him one year because he was a senior.

2017 - JV boys 110m hurdle district champion from South Salem HS as a Freshman. (He also led the league in the 300m hurdles by almost three seconds but then got hurt the week before league finals and only ran the 110m hurdles at Finals).

2016 - Boys 300m hurdle district champion and State qualifier from South Salem HS. I only worked with him one year because he was a senior.

2016 - Boys 100m hurdle 8th grade Meet of Champions state qualifier from Leslie MS. (This is the same boy who was the JV district champion above from SSHS).

2013-2015 -  Hurdle coach at Aptos Jr. High, Aptos, CA. There were 3 divisions of boys and 3 divisions of girls. Over the three years that I coached there I had 12 league champions out of the 18 divisions.

(This list is extensive so I will stop here).

Notice that with almost every athlete above I was only able to work with them for ONE year, and many had NO previous hurdle experience. Imagine what I can do with an athlete who I'm able to coach for multiple years!!

About Coach Reason's own hurdle experience, he ran the hurdles at South Salem HS and set the school record in the 300m hurdles in 1981 with a time of 38.9 seconds. He is currently ranked 2nd on the all-time list. He also ran 15.4 seconds in the 110m hurdles. Coach Reason also ran the 400m hurdles at Linfield University for four years and is currently ranked 10th overall.

Coach Reason was a Physical Education, Health, and Math teacher at the Elementary, Middle School, High School and Collegiate levels for 37 years, as well as an assistant and head track coach at various schools. He retired at Christmas break 2022 from both full time teaching and being the head coach at a nearby high school here in the valley. He is currently the hurdle coach at a local high school here in Salem and plans to focus on his taekwondo business, investment business, and personal hurdle coaching.

Coach Reason is married and has an adult son.

How Does Coach Reason Help Hurdlers Improve

Hurdle Technique

Steps to First Hurdle

Starts From Blocks

The biggest thing that an outside observer will notice about Mr. Reason's hurdlers who have been coached by him for at least a year, and especially 2-3+ years, is their hurdle technique is far superior than most of their opponents.

Being a former hurdler himself from early high school and four years in college, Mr. Reason knows about and teaches the smallest details of being a great hurdler.

Starts From Blocks

Steps to First Hurdle

Starts From Blocks

To be a great hurdler, an athlete must know how to use blocks properly; how to set them so the leg angles are exactly right, how to get into them, and how to use them to explode out instead of just stepping out, as many hurdlers and sprinters do.

Also, they will learn which foot they need to have in front and behind in the blocks so they are taking the correct number of steps to the first hurdle based on their current speed and which leg is their lead leg.

Stepping and Rhythm Between Hurdles

Mr. Reason helps hurdlers know exactly how many steps they need to take to get to the first hurdle based on their current speed and which leg is their lead leg so they are attacking the hurdle at full speed and not hesitating, stuttering, or over-striding.

One key to maintaining their speed, stepping, and rhythm between the hurdles is how fast they can get to the first hurdle.

Stepping and Rhythm Between Hurdles

For Middle School / Junior High Hurdlers

Stepping and Rhythm Between Hurdles

Most new hurdlers begin by taking 5 steps between the hurdles. Mr. Reason helps hurdlers learn their opposite lead leg so that they can eventually switch to 4 steps so they don't stutter, and finally to 3 steps as their technique, speed, and strength improve.

Mr. Reason also teaches hurdlers how to sprint between the hurdles and not bound between them like an antelope, especially when they are first learning to 3-step.

Mental Preparation to Compete

For Middle School / Junior High Hurdlers

For Middle School / Junior High Hurdlers

Having the mentality and confidence to attack the hurdles and barely clear them without being scared of hitting them, as well as doing mental visualization of what their technique and their stepping between hurdles should look like prior to racing, are just a couple aspects of the mental preparation that Mr. Reason teaches.

For Middle School / Junior High Hurdlers

For 7th and 8th grade boys - The jump from 30" hurdles to the high school's 39" hurdles is a huge difference and can take boys a couple of years to adjust and sometimes causes them to initially develop bad habits to try and get over the taller hurdles. To help them begin to adjust and develop correct habits, 7th grade boys will practice with the 33" hurdles and 8th grade boys will practice with the 36" hurdles in preparation for the high school's 39" high hurdles.

Additionally, to prepare both boys and girls for the 300-meter hurdles, 7th graders will begin learning the 150 meter hurdles, and 8th graders the 225 meter hurdles.

and Much More!!

and Much More!!

and Much More!!

There is much more that Mr. Reason teaches about being a great hurdler from his years of being a hurdler and a hurdle coach. This includes things like; proper eating habits, getting enough sleep, being a leader on the team, goal-setting, lifting weights to get stronger, how to push themself in workouts to get into the best shape that they are capable to take advantage of their new and improved hurdle technique, and more.
